The schools can only be as good as the support of the parents. Look at TPS involvement compared to the Suburb schools. With parents who are involved with their students and actually know the teachers, the students can do well and enjoy going to school. It's a small school so the teachers know almost all of the students. They aren't just one of the many where you are just another number.

As far as academics and extracurricular activities, I am very satisfied with the choices my child has at Horizon Science. She is challenged in many ways! Some of the students may be a bit raunchy, however, the school has several avenues the student can take advantage of to be successful. I am hoping in the coming school year the school gets alot more parent involvement to encourage the students and give them a lot of love and motivation. The same parents, which is a handful continue to volunteer for events and activities. Parents should get involved and know and understand the importance of participating with the childs school, it enourages them!

Horizon Science Academy(High), Cleveland. This school is one of few options outside of Cleveland Public Schools for parents who can not afford private schools. The provide a pretty controlled environment as far as behavior is controlled. Safety inside the school is good, as they nip problems in the bud effectively as far as behavior is concerned. Safety on the outside is another issue. The school housed it high school, middle school and elementary school all on the same grounds in a very small area. The parking lot is small and there are no marked crosswalks for the students. Kids are everywhere. It is a breeding ground for a child to be hit by cars. They dart out everywhere. The school sits far back of East 55th street and there are no sidewalk, so they walk in the street with busy traffic.

They forced me to provide at least one star, however I feel no star would have been appropriate. I have a children in the Toledo locations, both Toledo and Springfield. The lack of electives at the high school level is simply unacceptable. Lack of athletics is another huge downside. Complete lack of organization school wide. Not to be racist or hateful, but it is very hard to understand and hold conversations with faculty. Overall, this system is years behind local public schools in every measurable way. My kids are going back to public schools first chance.

Horizon Science Academy is one of the better choices in the metro Cleveland area. In 2006 Horizon was rated an effective school. The school is clean, decently run, and safe. There aren't many athletic programs and the other extracurriculars are somewhat limited but teachers all are required to run at least one club and there always are afterschool activities as well as a number of field trips and other activities. The emphasis is definitely on academics first and extracurriculars second. Parents are relatively active in the school and are much more involved than in other Cleveland metro schools. Horizon compares favorably to suburban schools in the area and is far better than the local public schools.
